No Pipeline. No Feeder System. No Problem.

What Our First Season Taught Us About Coaching, Loyalty, and Building Something That Lasts

When I look back on our first season as Texas Royalty Fastpitch, I keep coming back to one question:

What is coaching?

Is coaching gathering 150 kids at a tryout, selecting the most talented fifteen, and managing a roster?

Or is coaching taking a group of athletes, teaching them, challenging them, and helping them become something they weren't before?

Those are two very different philosophies.

This year, we bet on the second one.

We walked away from the comfort of a large organization because we believed something had been lost. We believed coaching had become secondary to collecting talent. We believed player development still mattered. Most importantly, we believed loyalty still mattered.

That belief became the foundation of Texas Royalty.

Three Players

When we left, we didn't take an entire organization with us.

We didn't have a feeder system.

We didn't have a pipeline.

We didn't have a nationally recognized logo that automatically attracted the best players in the state.

We had three returning athletes.

Three.

Some families decided to move on because the familiar logo was gone. That's part of sports, and we sincerely wish every one of those athletes success.

The families who stayed weren't buying into a brand.

They were buying into a belief.

They believed in our coaches.

They believed in development.

And they believed in loyalty.

From those three returning players, we built a roster of thirteen new athletes and began building something much bigger than a softball team.

We began building a culture.

Loyalty Over Convenience

Then we made a decision that probably surprised a lot of people.

Nearly every athlete on this roster was eligible to play 16U.

Several could have been playing 14U.

Instead, we chose to compete at 18U.

Not because it gave us the easiest path.

Not because it gave us the best chance to win.

But because it gave our senior one final season surrounded by teammates willing to sacrifice for something bigger than themselves.

That decision says everything about this group.

These young women willingly challenged themselves because loyalty mattered more than comfort.

As coaches, moments like that remind you that the lessons learned through sports often matter far more than the scoreboard.

We Didn't Chase Easy

We weren't interested in finding weak 18U tournaments.

We weren't interested in protecting our record.

We wanted our athletes tested.

That meant playing against older, stronger, more experienced competition every single weekend.

Along the way we reached the Elite 8 at the Team 1 Invitational in Kansas, competed in one of the premier events in the country at the 18U Colorado Fireworks Power Pool, finishing 4-2-1, and ultimately finished our inaugural season right around .500 against one of the toughest schedules we could find.

Some people will look at a .500 record and stop there.

We don't.

Context matters.

This wasn't an established powerhouse.

This wasn't a roster that had spent years growing together.

This wasn't a program built through a pipeline.

It was a first-year organization with three returning players and a roster made up primarily of freshmen and sophomores competing against juniors, seniors, and college-bound athletes.

That isn't average.

That's growth.

That's development.

That's coaching.

Coaching Isn't About Today

Of course there were games we'd like to have back.

There were moments when our inexperience showed.

There were close losses that could have easily become wins.

That's part of building something meaningful.

Chemistry isn't built overnight.

Trust isn't built overnight.

Programs aren't built overnight.

Every mistake became another lesson.

Every challenge became another opportunity to grow.

Every weekend our athletes proved they belonged.

Our Mission Has Never Changed

Winning matters.

Competing matters.

Championships matter.

But those things have never been the reason we coach.

Our mission is simple.

We want to develop athletes who are ready to compete for a starting position the day they step onto a college campus.

That means teaching accountability.

That means demanding effort.

That means helping athletes become mentally tougher, physically stronger, and fundamentally better than they were yesterday.

Development isn't something we talk about.

It's the standard we coach to every single day.

Thank you for trusting us enough to let us coach you hard.

Thank you for embracing uncomfortable moments.

Thank you for choosing growth over convenience.

To our parents...

Thank you for trusting us with your daughters.

Thank you for every mile driven, every hotel room booked, every late-night conversation, and every sacrifice made so these young women could chase their dreams.

Your belief made this possible.

To our coaching staff...

Thank you for proving that coaching still matters.

And to the three families who believed in this program before there was anything to prove...

You didn't just join a team.

You helped build a foundation.

This Is Only the Beginning

Our first season wasn't the finish line.

It was the cornerstone.

These athletes will continue getting stronger.

They'll become more experienced.

They'll continue learning how to compete, how to lead, and how to overcome adversity.

We will continue teaching.

We will continue developing.

We will continue challenging.

Because that's who we are.

We don't promise shortcuts.

We don't promise that a logo will earn recruiting opportunities.

We promise that every athlete who walks into our program will leave a better player—and a better person—than when they arrived.

No pipeline.

No feeder system.

No problem.

Just coaches who believe development still matters.

The foundation has been built.

Now it's time to ASCEND.
